Hypnotherapy Explained

Hypnotherapy Explained

I would like to take this opportunity to explain to you how hypnotherapy works and how it can be of great benefit to you, so that you have a good understanding of what hypnotherapy is.

I would like you to forget all that you have heard regarding hypnotherapy that may have come from stage shows or horror films. Hypnotherapy is not some form of mystical mind control that robs a person of their will or ability to make informed choices. No one can make you do anything that you do not want to do. Hypnosis is an altered state  of awareness, that makes you more receptive to suggestions and directions that are intended to assist you in making positive changes in your life.

Hypnosis has been practised for around 6,000 years. There is evidence in ancient Sanskrit writings of the use of healing trances and healing temples in India and ancient Egyptian scrolls also tell of  the use of sleeping temples and the use of trance inductions for healing. The  term hypnosis comes from a Greek word meaning “sleep”. Even the ancient Greeks had sleep temples where people’s dreams could be recorded.

There have been many  misconceptions regarding hypnosis, and although this may be unfamiliar territory for you, I would like to let you know it is a widely respected and  practised method of treatment. Actually, hypnosis is a natural state, and those  who don’t believe that they can be hypnotized may have been misinformed, or  don’t really understand the true nature of the hypnotic state, and how it can  ultimately change your life for the better. When you are in hypnosis you do not  need to be asleep, in fact, most people under hypnosis are alert and are able  to talk and move.

Our minds function in four stages of consciousness:

The first stage is called Beta: This is the stage where you are fully awake and able to make conscious decisions.

The second stage is called Alpha: During this state the brain is 200 times more receptive to  suggestion than in Beta – you experience Alpha state many times throughout the  day naturally for example if you are reading a good book or watching a film and  you stop noticing other distractions around you, time seems to have passed by  without you being able to account for it – then you are experiencing hypnosis.

The third stage is Theta: Which is when you are in a light sleep and you would easily awake to a sound or a light touch and you naturally achieve this state just before going to sleep or waking up.

The fourth stage is Delta: Which is a deep  sound sleep. Even in Delta state you will still be listening to what I am  saying and getting the same benefit from your session. Your hearing never turns  off even when you are sleeping. Your subconscious will be getting all the  information needed to make positive changes in your life. So if you do feel  yourself drifting off to sleep, that is okay. You will still be benefiting from  what I am saying.

Remember – Hypnotherapy is perfectly natural and, as I just mentioned, it is also widely used and accepted. You are not asleep or in a trance, you are just very relaxed. You may be aware of everything I say to you during your session and that’s okay – you will still be in hypnosis.

Being in Alpha state, as I have already explained, means you are 200 times more receptive to suggestions – so we will be using this state to reprogram your subconscious to get rid of any negative programming that is no longer needed. I don’t want you to  be concerned if you get the sensation that you have fallen asleep. You will have entered a deeper level of hypnosis, and you will still be able to hear what I am saying to you. When a mother is asleep, she still can hear the cry of her baby or child. You see, unlike all of the other senses, your hearing ability never ceases. Your ears and brain are always registering. They work twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The power of the subconscious and the mind is limitless. Throughout your session you will have complete control and if at any time you wish to come out of hypnosis all you need do is count one, two, three in your mind and open your eyes. The session will then be over leaving you feeling completely relaxed and calm.
